Science 2.0

I'm interested in ways in which IT and web technology can be used to facilitate science research. This can include lab resources such as blogs and wikis for enhancing information sharing and collaboration, but also other tools and services for discovering new science, improving record-keeping, and even enabling science experiments to be done online. At some point when I find some time, I'll extend this section to discuss some of my thoughts and findings.

Website Development

In the past, I used to be a website developer, with my specialty being content management systems or CMSs.
Before returning to Oxford for my PhD, I spent two years as a professional Tridion CMS developer/consultant, and did project work for various government organisations in the UK and the Netherlands. After I returned to Oxford, I was the webmaster for Linacre College, where I implemented the existing site into a free open-source CMS called Plone.
I've been doing freelance web design/development work since 1998. Here are some projects that I've set up in the last few years, which are still active:

  • 2005: El Comite de Longmont - set up a simple dual-language site and wrote a custom PHP/MySQL based content management system for it. This CMS allows generation of static HTML pages which are deployed automatically over FTP, which makes it usable on any basic ISP which doesn't allow scripting or website hosting. When I've developed it further, I'll make it freely available online.
  • 2007: Linacre Boat Club - integrated the old boat club site into the Linacre College CMS (Plone), to allow easy site updates in future.
  • 2007: Bobby and Carolyn Wedding Site - wrote this in preparation for our wedding in August 2007.
  • 2008: sephaCe - set this up to promote my PhD research work. It features several image analysis applications which can be downloaded and used for free.
  • 2008: OCCAM - this was a recent project for a department in the Maths Institute, who needed a template that would work within Drupal yet look very different to the rest of the Maths website. I did this in collaboration with Angie Wilson from Jalapeno Design.
  • 2009: Pixel Project - I'm consulting on the web development for this start-up non-profit organisation aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence against women.
